These hot sandwiches have the advantage of not needing to be cooked at all and, because the ingredients are from foods that keep reasonably well in cool fall temperatures, can be taken on trips without refrigeration. But they are so much better on those cool fall evenings when heated.
In a small bowl, combine butter, mustard, onions, poppy seeds, and dillseed. Spread an equal amount of the butter mixture on the insides of each bun half. Place 1 slice of cheese and 2 slices of ham on the bottom half ot each bun. Cover with the bun tops. Cut 4 (12-inch) pieces of heavy-duty foil. Wrap foil around each sandwich in a flat pack.
Cooking Methods
Oven
Preheat oven to 350F. Place foil packs on the center rack and bake for 10-15 minutes or until the cheese melts.
Campfire
Place double-wrapped foil packs on warm embers and cook for 10-15 minutes or until cheese melts. Move packs as needed to obtain even heating.
Grill
Preheat grill to low heat, Place foil packs on the grill over indirect heat, close lid and cook for 10-20 minutes or until cheese melts. Move packs as needed to obtain even heating.
